Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 Released

Well I have certainly found this latest service pack a great addition, not because of the fixes but rather the host of new enhancements this service pack includes.  SP2 includes much anticipated features such as the Hybrid Configuration Wizard, Address Book Policies, Outlook Web App Mini and Cross-Site Silent Redirection for Outlook Web App as well as the customer requested fixes and rollups released prior to service pack 2.

Microsoft Lync Conversation Translator Helps Oil Company

Had a fantastic opportunity to “WOW” a client recently, the jaw dropped when I demonstrated it. Microsoft Lync Conversation Transalator is one of eight great tools made available since the Lync product launch, this particular one being capable of a real-time language translation service for Lync instant messaging (IM)  conversations. With Conversation Translator, both the sender and receiver can converse in their native language, and Conversation Translator handles the translation. Powered by the Microsoft Translator Web Service, Conversation Translator currently supports translation between 35 languages.  In my case it allowed conversation between staff on oilrigs in total different locations around the globe.

The other tools are:

  • IM an Expert
  • Conversations Analyser
  • Conversation Translator
  • Information Dashboard
  • Tabbed Conversations
  • Group Chat Stress
  • Lync Custom Intranet Site
  • Lync How-to

Microsoft Officially Welcomes Skype

Well you’ve heard about it before but over my holiday break Microsoft officially welcomed Skype into the fold.  The completion of the acquisition earlier this month also marks the official introduction of Skype as a new business division within Microsoft.

“Skype is a phenomenal product and brand that is loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “We look forward to working with the Skype team to create new ways for people to stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues — anytime, anywhere.”

Microsoft Lync Standard Edition – Disaster Recovery Plan

I was dealing with a customer query regarding Lync recovery plans earier this week.  They only have deployed Lync Server 2010 Standard Edition and had some concerns around it being a single point of failure.  It came as no surprise to find a fantastic couple of postings on NextHop.  If you haven’t heard about it before get it bookmarked.  NextHop is the Microsoft Lync Server team’s customer response channel—a new medium to rapidly make the information you need available to you, when you need it. NextHop provides pertinent, short-format, technical articles between major releases of the product and associated product documentation (technical library content, Resource Kit book, whitepapers, and tools).

This two-part article outlines a step-by-step disaster recovery process for a single Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Standard Edition Front End Server.
